The animated adventure Amos, the Mask Hunter, co-distributed internationally by CBC & Radio-Canada Distribution and the German company Beta Film, takes place in the medieval fantasy world created by Quebec author Bryan Perro for his series of books Amos Daragon, started in 2003, since translated into 24 languages and sold to nearly 3 million copies worldwide.
By sending its magician title character on a quest with a Gorgon, a shapeshifting warrior, a dragon and a black necromancer, the series aims to address contemporary issues such as inclusion, gender equality and conflict resolution for children of six to 10 year-olds.
An orphan from a poor family, Amos retains the simplicity that characterizes the heroes of folk tales.
In this series, Amos is a young 14-year-old with an open-mind, a pure heart and a particularly sharp intelligence. Endowed with a steely determination, his main strength is his lucidity. His weakness, however, is his inexperience and his difficulty in concentrating or focusing at the right time, and in carefully controlling his emotions when facing his adversaries, which can affect the powers of his masks.
Recognising his great qualities, the White Lady chose Amos to become the wearer of Masks, and thus the guardian of peace and harmony in the world.
His encounter with the White Lady and the great adventures which he experiences in the course of the novel have made Amos what he is at the start of this new televised quest: each of the Masks of Power is connected to one of the four elements: air, fire, water and earth. He sets out on his hunt for the half masks of balance with the advantage of having power over the elements.
This orphan girl is a former queen of a tribe from distant lands in the far south of the World. In this animated series, she is a 13-year-old teenager.
Abandoning her crown to her younger sister in order to follow Amos on his quest, Lolya is a generous and dedicated adventurer and a strong female character who destroys stereotypes.
Lolya does the best she can in all areas of witchcraft and uses tiny Dogon bones to predict the future. Very attentive to her dreams and their hidden meanings, she is able to capture messages from spirits and supernatural beings that live in other planes of existence. In addition, to occasionally practicing shamanism and druidic rituals, Lolya has mastered the art of potion making in addition to studying the alchemy and mysteries of Aylol, the dagger of Baal.
Beorf is the warrior of the group. In this series, he is a 15 year-old teenager, and Amos’s closest companion.
He is a “bear-man”, a Beorite (a race of metamorphs* from the far north). Barely older than his friend the Mask Wearer, this immensely strong and friendly boy is a great optimist. Destined to become the legitimate leader of the village of which he is a native, he is the last member of the legendary Bromanson family and has, like his ancestors, the ability to turn himself into a bear. Beorf uses this power, often in spite of himself, only in “extreme” situations: when he is very afraid, when he is very angry, or… when he is very hungry. Despite his huge stature he is very agile and becomes a formidable fighter if his life or that of one of his friends is threatened.
(Metamorphs*: Humans who can turn into animals)
Medusa is the most intriguing companion of Amos because she is a gorgon. In this series, she is a 15-year-old teenager.
She feeds on insects. She has an athletic body and snake hair. Like all gorgons, one look from her large protruding eyes has the power to turn people to stone. For this reason, and to protect people from her glance, she always wears special protective glasses. She has green skin, webbed feet and membranes under the arms, like a flying squirrel, which make her an expert swimmer and give her the ability to glide through the air. Underwater, her athleticism is like that of an Olympic swimmer. On land, she uses her powerful legs to make huge leaps into the air, and to glide over great distances.
This young humanoid does not know her parents, since she hatched from an egg. A little embarrassed by her appearance in front of the strangers, she is the most introverted character of the series, but is devoted body and soul to the mission of the Wearer of Masks.
Writer, storyteller, actor and director, Bryan Perro launched in 2003 the first volumes of his children’s series Amos Daragon, which would become one of the best-selling series in Quebec with 1,700,000 titles sold. Translated into twenty-four languages and present in twenty-seven countries, Bryan Perro remains to this day one of the most widely read Canadian authors around the globe. He was made Chevalier de l’Ordre de la Pléiade by the International Order of La Francophonie in 2015.
Bryan Perro is one of the few Quebec authors translated in China.
The Half-Masks of Balance, mythical artefacts with powerful attributes, bewitch their victims and create imbalance in the world. The Council of the Wise directs Amos Daragon – wearer of the Masks of Power over the Elements – to restore harmony by collecting all the half masks.
Trained by his spiritual master, Sartigan, and helped by his friends: Medusa, a mysterious gorgon; Lolya, a dynamic necromancer; Beorf the humanimal Beorite; Maelstrom, a young dragon; and three wacky carrier pigeons, Amos is quick to claim the mighty relics.
But a formidable elf wizard called Black Sun has been sent on the same quest by Seth – god of betrayal and jealousy – who, once all the half-masks are collected, will be able to forge the legendary Mask of Chronos which will allow him to control time and reign forever.
